Intrepid Museum

intrepidThe Intrepid Museum is currently closed; it is being renovated. But it is scheduled to re-open on November 8, 2008.

We don't yet know what space-related exhibits will be aboard, but the ship itself was a primary recovery vessel for NASA. It was the primary recovery ship for Scott Carpenter's Mercury flight, Aurora 7. When the craft landed hundred's of miles off target, the Intrepid sent out two helicopters to search for the craft and astronaut. Both were successfully recovered. The Intrepid also recovered the first manned Gemini flight, the "Molly Brown" (Gemini 3) and it's crew, Gus Grissom and John Young.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is located on the West side of Manhattan on Pier 86, 12th Ave. & 46th Street.
